SOUTH BOSTON, VA (April 21, 2025) – It was around six years ago that Trevor Ward last competed for a track championship. During the off-season Ward and his team made the decision to compete for the 2025 South Boston Speedway Sentara Health Late Model Stock Car Division title.
“We thought about competing for the championship at South Boston two, three, or four months before the big points fund came about,” Ward explained. “I feel like this is more my home track than anywhere. I get along with everybody here. I love racing at this facility. Everybody’s doing a great job with what they’re doing. This is the next biggest thing going for us now in the short track world.”
Ward knew when he contemplated competing for the championship at South Boston Speedway that winning the championship would be a tough task and that he would be facing deep, stiff competition.
“I came here because I knew the competition was going to be tough,” Ward pointed out. “It’s going to be a challenge. Everybody loves a new challenge. Coming here, when you win, you feel like you’ve accomplished something. At the end of the day, it’s between six or eight of us to win each race. When you capitalize on it, it definitely means something. You’re only as good as your competition.”
Ward’s decision to compete for the South Boston Speedway championship has proven to be a great one thus far. He leads the Sentara Health Late Model Stock Car Division point standings entering the 100-lap Late Model Stock Car Division race that headlines the Advance Auto Parts Day at the Races presented by Bojangles event on Saturday afternoon, April 26 at South Boston Speedway.
Entering this weekend’s event, the last day race on South Boston Speedway’s 2025 season schedule, Ward, with finishes of third, first, and second, has a five-point lead over Mike Looney of Catawba, Virginia and a six-point edge over two-time NASCAR national champion and seven-time South Boston Speedway champion Peyton Sellers of Danville, Virginia who has won two of his three starts. Landon Pembelton of Amelia, Virginia is fourth in the standings, 10 points out of the lead, and last year’s championship runner-up, Blake Stallings of Danville, Virginia, is fifth, 14 points behind Ward.
Ward notes that the title chase is wide open.
“There are a lot of good drivers here like Mike Looney that are getting their momentum built up that can win the championship,” Ward said. “It could be between Peyton, myself and three or four others. We’ve just got to keep our nose to the grindstone, keep plugging away each week, get better and try to collect more points.
“It’s about keeping your nose clean week after week,” he added. “Then, you come back here, and you capitalize on any point you can. That is what puts you in contention. That’s what we have put our mind to, and hopefully it will pay off in our favor.”
In addition to the 100-lap race for the competitors in the Sentara Health Late Model Stock Car Division, Saturday afternoon’s six-race card includes twin 30-lap races for the Budweiser Limited Sportsman Division, a 25-lap race for the Southside Disposal Pure Stock Division, a 20-lap race for the Dollar General Hornets Division and a 25-lap race for the regional touring East Coast Flathead Ford Racing Association.
