SOUTH BOSTON, VA (March 19, 2025) – South Boston Speedway will launch its 2025 season Friday and Saturday, March 21-22 with one of its biggest and most exciting events of the season, the Second Annual SMART Modified Tour Pace-O-Matic King of the Modifieds powered by Dominion Energy event on URW Community Federal Credit Union Race Day.

Four races will be featured on URW Community Federal Credit Union Race Day, highlighted by the Second Annual SMART Modified Tour Pace-O-Matic King of the Modifieds race, a 125-lap race featuring the country’s top tour-type Modified drivers that will pay $20,000 to win and carry one of the season’s richest purses in asphalt Modified racing.

In addition, fans will see twin 50-lap races for South Boston Speedway’s Sentara Health Late Model Stock Car Division, each paying $2,500 to win, and a 50-lap race for the regional touring Alliance DriveAway Solutions STAR Super Stock Tour to round out Saturday afternoon’s four-race card.

Three-time SMART Modified Tour Champion Burt Myers of Walnut Cove, North Carolina, who won the SMART Modified Tour race at South Boston Speedway last October and scored his first career win at the .4-mile oval, is looking to back up that win with a victory in Saturday’s 125-lap race.

“It was a long time coming,” Myers said of last October’s win. “We had a really good car. It was a perfect day for us. We were able to charge to the front and win the race. It gives us a lot of motivation for this weekend. To be able to take this win home with us would be one of the biggest wins of my career.”

Myers said the King of the Modifieds race is a tough race to win.

“It’s a crazy race because there is so much on the line and it is so prestigious that guys are driving really hard,” Myers pointed out. “When you’ve got 35-plus cars on a four tenths of a mile racetrack and put up that kind of number for a purse guys are really getting after it. It will be the best-of-the-best in Modifieds, especially in the South, and we’ve got some northern guys coming down to run this race. This is definitely a race we want to win.”

This weekend’s King of the Modifieds race is attracting some of the top names in tour-type Modified racing. Among the drivers entered in the event are defending race winner and last year’s SMART Modified Tour champion Luke Baldwin, former NASCAR Cup Series standout Ryan Newman, Matt Hirschman of Northampton, PA who finished as the runner-up to Baldwin in last year’s race, two-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Ron Silk of Norwalk, CT, Woody Pitkat of Stafford, CT, Anthony Bello of Newtown, CT, Carter McMurray, the son of former NASCAR Cup Series standout Jamie McMurray, and Brandon Ward of Winston-Salem, NC.

South Boston Speedway’s Sentara Health Late Model Stock Car Division will kick off its 2025 track championship chase with twin 50-lap races, each paying $2,500 to win, as the co-feature of Saturday’s URW Community Federal Credit Union Race Day.

Two-time NASCAR national champion Peyton Sellers of Danville, VA will start his quest for a record-breaking eighth career South Boston Speedway championship in the pair of 50-lap races. Also among the drivers expected to be on hand for the opener are last season’s runner-up, Blake Stallings of Danville, VA, Mike Looney of Catawba, Virginia who won the 2023 track championship at Pulaski County Motorsports Park (formerly known as Motor Mile Speedway), Trevor Ward of Winston-Salem, NC, a past winner of the ValleyStar Credit Union 300 at Martinsville Speedway, two-time winner of the Thunder Road Harley-Davidson 200 and three-time CARS Tour Late Model Stock Car Division champion Bobby McCarty of Summerfield, NC, last season’s Dominion Raceway champion Landon Pembelton of Amelia, VA, Mark Wertz of Chesapeake, VA who is a two-time champion at Larry King Law’s Langley Speedway and 2024 Langley Speedway champion Greg Edwards of Poquoson, VA, Kyle Dudley of Roanoke, VA. and Craig Moore of Rougemont, NC who won last season’s Sentara Health Late Model Stock Car Division season opener.

The regional touring Alliance DriveAway Solutions STAR Super Stock Tour will also be in action Saturday with a 50-lap race. Jeff Melton of Mooresville, NC was the winner when the tour made its first-ever stop at South Boston Speedway back in October. Alby Ovitt of Raleigh, North Carolina is the defending series champion. Ricky Locklair Jr. won the series’ 2025 season-opening Bundrick Rail 40 at Florence, SC on February 8.
