Dads Get Early Father’s Day Present With $5 Admission To Exciting, Nostalgic Night Of Racing At South Boston Speedway

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. (June 13, 2018) – On a night when fathers will be honored at South Boston Speedway everyone will be treated to an evening full of diverse racing.

The Halifax Insurance presents the Whelen NASCAR Late Model 100 will feature South Boston’s traditional Late Model Sportsman, Limited Sportsman, Budweiser Pure Stocks and Budweiser Hornets races, but the schedule is a little deeper this week. There will also be a USAC Eastern Midget race and a Southern Ground Pounders vintage race thrown in.

All fathers will be admitted for $5 in honor of Father’s Day on Sunday. Regular admission is $10 with children 12 and under admitted free.

Averaging over 21 cars a race, South Boston’s Late Model field is expected to be strong again this week as everyone is chasing four-time NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national champion Philip Morris, who swept the twin 75-lappers last week to stay atop the points standings. Peyton Sellers kept him in sight with a pair of second-place finishes last week, moving into second in the points past Thomas Scott who got caught up in a wreck in the first 75-lapper.
Austin Thaxton and Jason Barnes round out the top five in points.

The Southern Ground Pounders always put on a crowd-pleasing show with their vintage cars. They are a throwback to an era gone by in auto racing. The stated purpose of the organization is “to represent and preserve the heritage of vintage racing in a competitive atmosphere.” They blend two divisions – Sportsman and Modified – together into one 25-lap race.

Cars must be American-made style race cars of vintage age from 1929 to 1975 that raced up until the early 1980s. The roof and all quarter panels of all bodies must be original appearing per the year of manufacture for both classes. The Modified division includes, but is not limited to, Coupes, Coaches, Pintos, Gremlins and Vegas that would have been allowed in the time frame.

The USAC Eastern Midgets will get your attention. The open-wheel cars weigh in at just 950 pounds with a 200-horsepower engine. Typically, the Eastern Midgets are the fast class wherever they race.

Gates open at 5:30 p.m. with the first race beginning at 7 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults with children 12 and under admitted free.
