Good numbers turn out for SBS Open Practice/Media Day event

SOUTH BOSTON, VA - The roar of racing engines was heard for the first time this season at South Boston Speedway Saturday afternoon as the track hosted its annual pre-season Open Practice/Media Day event.

A total of 24 teams spread throughout the NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model Stock Car Division, the Limited Sportsman Division, the Budweiser Pure Stock Division and the Hornets Division took advantage of the open practice session to shake down their cars and equipment in preparation for the March 14 season-opening Danville Toyota NASCAR Whelen Late Model Twin 100’s racing program.

Blake Stallings of Danville, Va. turned the fastest lap of the day with a lap of 15.660 seconds and 91.954 mph in his Toyota, with Bobby McCarty of Summerfield, N.C., C.E. Falk of Virginia Beach, Va., Mark Wertz and Justin Carroll rounding out the top five fastest cars.

Defending South Boston Speedway Limited Sportsman Division Champion Danny Willis Jr, of Cluster Springs, Va. posted the fastest time among the Limited Sportsman Division drivers, with J.D. Eversole of Richmond being a close second.

Johnny Layne of Nathalie, Virginia posted the fastest lap of the day among the Pure Stock Division contingent.

Along with the open practice for the drivers and race teams, South Boston Speedway hosted a lunch for representatives from the local governing bodies, top county school system officials and members of the local news media. A picnic lunch was provided for 2015 season ticket holders that attended the event.

South Boston Speedway opens its season on Saturday afternoon, March 14, with the Danville Toyota NASCAR Whelen Late Model Twin 100’s racing program.

The five-event program will start at 2 p.m. and will be headlined by twin 100-lap races for the drivers and teams in the NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model Stock Car Division. A race for the Limited Sportsman Division and races for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division and Hornets Division will round out the season-opening event.

Pit gates will open and registration will start at 9 a.m. Practice will run from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Grandstand gates will open at 12 noon and qualifying time trials will begin at 12:30 p.m. The first race of the afternoon will get the green flag at 2 p.m.
Adult admission is $10 with kids ages six and under admitted free.
