Twin 100-lap Late Model races to highlight SoBo’s season-opening action Saturday
Sunny skies forecast for Danville Toyota-sponsored event
SOUTH BOSTON, VA. — Short track racing fans always flock to South Boston Speedway to see the “best of the best” compete in the NASCAR Whelen All American Series.
Saturday, March 9, those fans will be treated to a double dose of NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division action when America’s Hometown Track opens its 2013 campaign with the running of the Danville Toyota NASCAR Whelen Late Model Twin 100s racing program.
The season-opening event is set to begin Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
Highlighting the season-opening event will be twin races for the competitors in the NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division.
Events are also slated on the historic four-tenths mile asphalt oval for the Limited Sportsman Division and the Budweiser Pure Stock Division.
The region’s best NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division competitors will be battling for a pair of $2,500 paychecks Saturday in the twin 100-lap races. Both events will also count toward the 2013 track championship at South Boston Speedway.
“Our competitors have worked hard all winter readying for Saturday’s season opener,” South Boston Speedway General Manager Cathy Rice said. “They are excited to get a new season started and we are excited for them and for our fans.”
And, it looks like Mother Nature is going to cooperate with great weather for the season-opening event.
The National Weather Service’s advanced forecast for Saturday afternoon calls for sunny skies and a high temperature close to 60 degrees.
“It should be great day of racing at South Boston Speedway,” Rice said. “We can’t wait to see everyone this weekend.”
Pit gates will open Saturday at 8 a.m. and practice for all divisions will be held from 10:30 a.m. until noon.
Grandstand gates will open Saturday at noon and a mandatory drivers’ meeting is scheduled to start at 12:15 p.m.
Qualifying time trials to set the fields for the afternoon of racing will begin at 12:45 p.m.
Admission to Saturday’s season-opening action will be $10 for adults and children six and under will be admitted free with a paid adult.
