Pulliam Sweeps SBS Hall Of Fame Night Twinbill
South Boston, VA - Lee Pulliam kept himself in contention for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national championship by adding a pair of wins Saturday night at South Boston Speedway.
Pulliam swept both of the 75-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Car Division races that headlined Saturday night’s NASCAR Hall Of Fame Night Late Model Twin 75s racing program, which featured an appearance by NASCAR Hall Of Fame inductee Glen Wood who served as the Grand Marshal for the event.
The sweep of the two races gives Pulliam seven wins at South Boston Speedway this season, and a total of 12 wins for the season.
In the nightcap, Pulliam started fifth after a drawing for an inverted start, but needed only 11 laps to pass Lemons and take the lead. Pulliam led the rest of the race, pulling away to finish 1.711 seconds ahead of Lemons in a 22-lap stretch run to the finish.
Burton scored a season-best third-place finish in the first race, with track points leader Matt Bowling of Ridgeway, Va. and pole winner Austin Thaxton of South Boston, Va. rounding out the top five finishers.
In the second race, former South Boston Speedway and NASCAR national champion Peyton Sellers of Danville, Va. finished third with Dennis Holdren of Roanoke, Va. and Thaxton completing the top-five finishers.
Both races were highly competitive races. There were three lead changes among four drivers in the first race. There were two lead changes among three drivers in the nightcap.
McCarty Wins Limited Sportsman Race
Bobby McCarty of Summerfield, N.C. took the lead from Danny Willis Jr. on the 18th lap and sped to victory in the 50-lap Limited Sportsman Division race.
McCarty edged Willis, of Cluster Springs, Va., by 2.594 seconds in a 19-lap dash to the finish that followed the last of the race’s three caution periods.
The win was McCarty’s fourth victory of the season.
Blake Stallings of Danville, Va., Garrett Bunch and Joey Throckmorton of South Boston, Va. rounded out the top five finishers.
Crews, Allred Split Pure Stock Division Twinbill
Trey Crews of Halifax, Va. and Joe Allred III of Scottsburg, Va. split victories in the pair of 30-lap races for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division.
In the first race, Crews took the lead from Nathan Crews of Long Island, Va. on the 15th lap and sped to a 3.286-second win over Allred. Nathan Crews, Randy Hupp of Halifax, Va. and Chuck Watkins of Creedmoor, N.C. rounded out the top five finishers.
In the second race, Allred took the lead from Daniel Crews of Long Island, Va. on the seventh lap and fended off a late challenge from Trey Crews to pull out the win.
Daniel Crews, Hupp and Courtney Crosby of Scottsburg, Va. completed the top five finishers.
Trey Crews’ win was his second victory of the season. Allred’s win was his sixth of the season.
Ricketts Wins Legendary Ford Flatheads Race
Garland Ricketts of South Boston, Va. took the lead on the third lap and went on to win the 20-lap race for the competitors of the Legendary Ford Flatheads Racing Association.
The win was Ricketts’ sixth win in the series this season.
Randy Apple finished second, with Harry Hale, who finished third in the race, taking the win in the Sportsman Division.
Next Race At South Boston Speedway
South Boston Speedway will host the second of back-to-back events Saturday night, July 21, with the NASCAR Whelen Late Model 150 racing program.
A 150-lap race for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Car Division will highlight the six-race program that will also include twinbills for both the Limited Sportsman Division and the MAD Modified Division (Modified Affordable Division) as well as a race for the competitors in the Budweiser Pure Stock Division.
Pit gates will open at 1:00 p.m. Practice will go from 3 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 5 p.m. Qualifying time trials will start at 5:30 p.m. and the first race will start at 7 p.m.
Adult general admission tickets are $10 each. Kids under six years of age will be admitted free with a paying adult.
