The coming of a New Year means racing will be starting soon in 2012 at South Boston Speedway

SOUTH BOSTON, VA. — The holiday season is upon us. Santa Claus is coming to town this week and New Year's Day will be celebrated next weekend.

With the start of a new year just a week away, thoughts of many race fans and competitors are already on the 2012 racing season at South Boston Speedway.

The action-packed 2012 campaign at America's Hometown Track will roar to life on Saturday, March 10, with the running of the NASCAR Whelen Late Model 300.

Traditionally, the NASCAR Whelen Late Model 300 has closed out the season at South Boston Speedway, but the decision was made to move the event to the start of the campaign in 2012.

South Boston Speedway General Manager Cathy Rice explained earlier that moving the NASCAR Whelen Late Model 300 to the start of the 2012 season would give the event "a short track version of a Daytona 500 appeal and atmosphere."

Rice went on to say that all competitors will be eager to return to racing and the NASCAR Whelen Late Model 300 would provide the competitors and fans a great start to a new season.

The 2012 South Boston Speedway schedule features a total of 16 action-packed events.

In addition to NASCAR Whelen All American Series events for the Late Model Stock Car Division, Limited Sportsman Division and Budweiser Pure Stock Division, a host of special events are, once again, planned in 2012.

South Boston Speedway will host the touring PASS Super Late Model Series for three events in 2012. Those events are scheduled on March 24, June 9, and Aug. 18. All three of those events will also feature twin races for the competitors in the NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division.

The annual 200-lap FindItHere.com NASCAR Whelen Late Model Stock Car race and the annual Fireworks Extravaganza will be held on Tuesday, July 3. That event will also feature a 100-lap race for the Limited Sportsman Division and a 50-lap race for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division.

The NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour will visit the historic four-tenths mile asphalt oval on Saturday, April 14. That event will also feature twin races for the NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division.

The dates for NASCAR Whelen All American Series action at South Boston Speedway for the Late Model Stock Car Division, Limited Sportsman Division and Budweiser Pure Stock Division include April 7, May 5, May 12, May 26, June 16, July 14, July 21, Aug. 4, Sept. 1 and Sept. 15.

Season tickets for the upcoming year of racing are currently on sale and priced at only $150.
