Labor Day weekend kicks off Saturday at SoBo with the running of the GCR presents Spaulding Equipment Co. Late Model 150

SOUTH BOSTON, VA. — South Boston Speedway has the perfect way for race fans to kick off the Labor Day holiday weekend — the GCR presents Spaulding Equipment Co. Late Model 150.

The GCR presents Spaulding Equipment Co. Late Model 150 is set for a 7 p.m. start Saturday night and will feature five action-packed races. Highlighting the event will be a 150-lap battle for the competitors in the NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division.

Three-time NASCAR Whelen All American Series national champion Philip Morris will be bidding for his unprecedented 19th victory in the event and he will be looking to clinch his fourth national championship in the process.

Morris, who has already reeled off a single-season track record of 18 triumphs at the four-tenths asphalt oval, has already secured the 2011 South Boston Speedway NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division crown.

Heading into the final points weekend of the season, Morris holds a slim three-point lead over defending champion Keith Rocco in the chase for the NASCAR Whelen All American Series national championship. Morris is also leading the NASCAR Whelen All American Series Virginia state championship points battle by 23 points over Lee Pulliam.

Also scheduled for action Saturday night at South Boston Speedway are events for the Limited Sportsman Division, the Budweiser Pure Stock Division, which will hit the asphalt for two races, and the Southern Vintage Modifieds.

Danny Willis Jr. will carry a 15-point lead over second-place Brian Pembelton into the final Limited Sportsman Division points race of the season. Bobby McCarty is third in the title chase, while defending division champion Justin Snow rides in the fourth-place spot.

Joe Allred will sport a 23-point cushion over second-place Trey Crews heading into the twin races for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division Saturday night. Stuart Crews is currently third in the standings, but is only five points ahead of fourth-place Randy Hupp.

Darryl Lacks leads the championship chase in the Southern Vintage Modifieds. Donnie Lacks is second in the standings. He trails Darryl Lacks by 10 points and he is only three points ahead of third-place Daryl Gwynn.

Pit registration will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Practice for all divisions will be held from 2:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. and qualifying time trials will get underway at 5:30 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 5 p.m. and admission will be $10 for adults and children under the age of six will be admitted free with a paid adult.
