Let's go racing!!! SoBo to begin 2011 campaign Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.

SOUTH BOSTON, VA. — Saturday, March 12 is a date that has been circled on the calendars of many competitors and fans for quite some time. That date has nearly arrived.

South Boston Speedway will drop the green flag on the highly anticipated 2011 racing season Saturday with a special afternoon starting time of 2 p.m.

Four action-packed races are scheduled for season-opening action during the NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model 150 racing program, highlighted by a 150-lap event for the drivers in the NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division.

The race will feature many of the region's top Late Model Stock Car Division competitors, including former NASCAR Whelen All American Series national champion Peyton Sellers of Danville, Va.

Three other events are also scheduled for action on the four-tenths mile asphalt oval. They include clashes for the Limited Sportsman Division, the Budweiser Pure Stock Division and the Southern Vintage Modifieds.

While the area has been soaked with some much needed rain this week, the extended forecast for Saturday afternoon is ideal for a day at America's Hometown Track. The National Weather Service is calling on sunny skies with temperatures climbing near the 70-degree mark.

"We are so excited about beginning the 2011 season Saturday afternoon," South Boston Speedway General Manager Cathy Rice said. "We are expecting a superb field of competitors and the weather looks like it will cooperate greatly for us as well. We are looking forward to welcoming everyone back for another fantastic year of racing here at South Boston Speedway."

For the opening race of the season, pit registration will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday. Practice for all divisions will be held from 10:30 a.m. until noon and qualifying time trials will get underway at 12:45 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at noon and admission will once again be $10 for adults and children ages of six and under will be admitted free with a paid adult.

Saturday's season-opening action will mark the first of two events, which will feature afternoon starting times. The March 26 race will also feature an afternoon starting time of 2 p.m.

South Boston Speedway has 19 total events on the 2011 racing schedule. The first night race of the campaign is slated for Saturday, April 2.

Season tickets for all 19 events at South Boston Speedway remain on sale and can be purchased for only $150.
