Drivers, start your engines! SoBo's will crank up 2011 season on Saturday

SOUTH BOSTON, VA. — The day many drivers and fans have been waiting for is almost here. South Boston Speedway will begin the 2011 NASCAR Whelen All American Racing Series season Saturday, March 12, with a special afternoon starting time of 2 p.m.

Highlighting the season-opening NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model 150 racing program will be a 150-lap event for the drivers in the NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division.

The afternoon of racing will feature a total of four action-packed events. Also slated for action Saturday will be the Limited Sportsman Division, the Budweiser Pure Stock Division and the Southern Vintage Modifieds.

Many of the competitors who will hit the four-tenths mile asphalt oval for racing action Saturday were present this past weekend when America's Hometown Track hosted its annual Open Practice and Media Day. Many others had already practiced at the facility in the past few weeks.

"Everyone is very excited about the 2011 season," South Boston Speedway General Manager Cathy Rice said. "We had a good field of cars here for practice on Saturday and we have had many others here prior to that. We are looking for a great afternoon of racing to start the new season."

For the opening race of the season, pit registration will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday. Practice for all divisions will be held from 10:30 a.m. until noon and qualifying time trials will get underway at 12:45 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at noon and admission will once again be $10 for adults and children six and under will be admitted free with a paid adult.

Saturday's season-opening action will mark the first of two events, which will feature afternoon starting times. The March 26 race will also feature an afternoon starting time of 2 p.m.

South Boston Speedway has 19 total events on the 2011 racing schedule. The first night race of the campaign is slated for Saturday, April 2.

Season tickets for all 19 events at South Boston Speedway remain on sale and can be purchased for only $150.
