Miller, Loftin among favorites in NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour event at SoBo

SOUTH BOSTON, VA. — L.W. Miller will be considered among the favorites Saturday night when the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour makes its first visit to South Boston Speedway for the running of the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified 150.

Also featured as part of South Boston Speedway's first night race of the season will be a pair of 75-lap races for the drivers in the NASCAR Whelen Late Model Stock Car Division. The first of three races slated will get the green flag at 7 p.m.

While Saturday's event will be the first on the four-tenths mile asphalt oval for the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour, South Boston Speedway did host a NASCAR Modified Tour race in 2001 and L.W. Miller, the 2007 NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour champion, competed in that event and scored a 17th-place finish.

That experience has Miller hoping to score a victory in Saturday night's event.

"I have driven on the track and I think we will put on a good show for the fans," Miller said. "We have worked very hard to get ready for this weekend. The weather is supposed to be good and I want all the fans to come out and see a great show."

Brian Loftin, the defending champion of the series and the preseason pick by media members to claim the crown again this year, will be on hand this weekend. Along with Burt Myers and George Brunnhoelzl which are two of the other favorites to win at America's Hometown Track.

The top 24 starting positions in Saturday's NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour event will be deciding in time trials. The remaining two starting slots will be determined through the provisional process.

Practice will be held for both the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modifieds and NASCAR Whelen Late Models from 2:00 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 4:30 p.m. and qualifying time trials will get underway at 5 p.m.

The rain date for Saturday's will be Sunday, April 5.
